About the event

A project by Daniela Ruah, featured in the festival’s Portuguese selection and directly linked to her presence in the programme. My Type is a short film inspired by a true story about courage, connection, and the beautiful messiness of being human with a Type 1 Diabetes twist.

In the narrative short film, My Type, directed by Daniela Ruah and shot on 16mm film in Santa Barbara, CA, Lila doesn't take chances. A med student living with Type 1 diabetes, she has learned the hard way what happens when she stops paying attention. A week ago, lost in a phone call with a guy she'd met online, she forgot to reattach her insulin pump and woke up on her bedroom floor.

Now she's finally meeting him for their first date. Oliver is warm, funny, and also lives with T1D, but he treats his numbers like a suggestion. He also has a flight to New York at 11:00 pm.

Funny, flirtatious, and quietly brave, My Type is inspired by the story of real-life couple — Elise Scalfani and Zach White — and producer Nicole MacNaughton’s T1D diagnosis in March of 2025.
