Tribeca Festival Lisboa returns for second edition in autumn

After a first edition of contrasts between “a gigantic industry” and “a small country like Portugal” – as the pages of Expresso dictated in October last year -, the Tribeca Festival Lisboa will have a second iteration in Lisbon between October 30th and November 1st, at the Unicorn Factory, in Beato.

The event is part of the commitment to promoting independent cinema, art and storytelling by Tribeca Enterprises, founded in 2003, still in the aftermath of September 11, by Robert de Niro, producer Jane Rosenthal and investor Craig Hatkoff (in 2019, James Murdoch, son of Rupert Murdoch and former CEO of 21st Century Fox, bought a majority stake in the company), which organizes the Tribeca Festival in New York every spring.

In 2024, the festival will reach across the Atlantic to Lisbon for the first European edition of the festival, in partnership with SIC, its streaming platform OPTO and Lisbon City Council.

“Last year, the city of Lisbon welcomed Tribeca with open arms and we found a home away from home, a creative haven full of inspiration and innovation,” said Jane Rosenthal, CEO of Tribeca Enterprises, in a statement. “Tribeca believes that cities flourish when their arts communities are supported, which is why this partnership means so much to us,” he added.

This year’s program promises the screening of independent films from the US, as well as Portuguese films, series and podcasts, musical performances and conversations with prominent figures from national and international cinema.

The inaugural session, in the same space as Unicorn Factory Lisboa, opened with the national premiere of “Anora”, by Sean Baker, which won five Oscars a few weeks ago, at the 2024 Academy Awards. The festival also brought to Portugal names such as Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, co-founders, Whoopi Goldberg and Patty Jenkins, as well as Portuguese stars such as Joaquim de Almeida, Daniela Ruah and Sara Sampaio.
