Xmas With Mozart — Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa
An evening of live music with the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, presented as part of Music. The associated programme includes the podcast Geração 80, with Francisco Pedro Balsemão and Inês Andrade.
It is unlikely that Mozart ever decorated a Christmas tree. At the time, the custom was restricted to Protestant families in northern and central Germany, for whom those trees that remain green through the winter symbolized perseverance and hope—Austria was under the rule of the Catholic Habsburg dynasty. Curiously, we recognize that same enduring quality in Mozart's music: in its own way, it withstands the winters of life. A good example of this is the Oboe Concerto, the score of which was rediscovered after more than a century of oblivion. Even more evident are the Viennese symphonies: together, the Haffner and the Jupiter translate the universal dimension and posthumous projection of his legacy. After all, Mozart endures whenever and however we wish (literally: Mozart is whenever Man wants).
