O Dia Mais Feliz da Minha Vida
A film by Vicente Alves do Ó, featured in the festival’s Portuguese selection.
Sines, 1982. Ten-year-old Vasco lives with his mother—a hairdresser—is the child of an adulterous affair, dreams of the television series Space: 1999, and sleeps on a pull-out sofa. He does not speak to his father, whom he watches from afar every day after school. He runs away from home to play on the streets and gets beaten with a belt when he loses track of time. He steals his mother's wallet, adores his grandmother, is afraid of horses, but above all, he tries to survive a daily life without rules, without a future, without principles, and without reason. Over the course of a year, we follow this kid's life: the realization of the reality around him, the silence and the shame, the discoveries of cinema and books, his mother's depression and his father's absence, and the certainty that to survive, one must grow up—even if it is long before their time.
